The 2023 Charles Todd Orator is Rob Nicholls.

Rob Nicholls is an associate professor in regulation and governance at the UNSW Business School and a visiting professional fellow at UTS Sydney Law. His research interests focus on competition policy, the regulation of networked industries and the financial services sector, with an emphasis on the effects of technology in the regulatory space.

Rob Nicholls will be introduced by last year's Charles Todd Orator, Michelle Rowland MP, Minister for Communications.

Dr Rob Nicholls

Rob Nicholls is an associate professor in regulation and governance at the UNSW Business School and a visiting professional fellow at UTS Sydney Law. His research interests focus on competition policy, the regulation of networked industries and the financial services sector, with an emphasis on the effects of technology in the regulatory space.

Rob’s thirty-year career has concentrated on competition, regulation and governance.  His first degree was in electronics and communications engineering from the University of Birmingham.  His PhD and MA were awarded by UNSW Sydney.  Before moving to academia, Rob worked for Webb Henderson and the ACCC; and spent twelve years as a client-facing consultant at Gilbert + Tobin, including as a partner.

The Hon Michelle Rowland MP, Minister for Communications

Ms Rowland is the Australian Minister for Communications.

Ms Rowland has a Masters of Law from the University of Sydney, has worked as a senior lawyer for Gilbert and Tobin specialising in competition and regulation in the telecommunications and media sector, was a Councillor and Deputy Mayor for Blacktown before being elected for parliament in 2010 and being re-elected a further four times. She served twice as Shadow Minister for Communications, before becoming Minister in June 2022.
