Engineers Australia: Introduction to HF radio and the ionosphere

TelSoc has pleasure in highlighting this event which is being run by Engineers Australia, both online and in Adelaide, on Tuesday 28 July 2026 from 6.30 PM to 7.30 PM AEST.

We are happy to support Engineers Australia in discussing this important subject.  TelSoc members and colleagues will be made welcome.

The speaker is Dr James Giesbrecht, Managing Director and Chief Engineer, Ebor Systems.  His biography appears on the Engineer Australia’s website registration page for the event: Introduction to HF radio and the ionosphere | Engineers Australia

This professional technical presentation explores the fundamentals of high‑frequency (HF) radio and the characteristics of the ionosphere that enable long‑distance radio communication. While scientific in nature, the topic directly informs the engineering design, operation, and reliability of HF communication systems.

Despite the prevalence of wide‑band technologies such as 4G/5G mobile networks and satellite communications, HF radio remains critical for government agencies, NGOs, aviation, maritime operations, and amateur radio users. With extremely narrow bandwidths and a congested spectrum, effective HF communication depends on a sound understanding of ionospheric propagation. This presentation provides attendees with the foundational knowledge required to understand, assess, and support HF communication systems in modern engineering contexts.

Once again, the link to the Engineers Australia online registration page is included in the description of the event below:
