The Rise and Fall of the Internet

After thirty years the Internet is showing signs of strain. The engagement of computers with communications had been heralded with such promise, but it has turned sour. Weâve seen the Internetâs powers of disruption in retail, television and newspapers. Now itâs turning on itself with dark tales of election tampering, the destructive side of social media and an unhealthy preoccupation with cyber warfare. How did the Internet embark on such a self-destructive path?
Geoff Huston is a pioneer of the Internet in Australia, bringing the technology to Australia in 1989. He has been closely involved in the evolution of the technology of the Internet for many years, working for the Universities, then with Telstra and is currently the Chief Scientist at the Asia Pacific Network Information Centre.

Join TelSoc and Geoff for a light refreshments and drinks on Thursday 20thJune 2019 in room CB11.06.408 in the UTS FEIT building 11, 81 Broadway, Ultimo NSW 2007.
We will watch the Melbourne speech live on video (from 6pm) and have our own networking.
We will start at 5:30pm and finish around 7:30pm, with drinks and light refreshments included.
We will also be joined live by TelSoc Members from around Australia.
