GfK upgrades 2016 smartphone forecast, Australia demand down 9% Emerging markets are powering smartphone sales, according to forecaster GfK, with full year global smartphone sales for 2016 set to increase from $400.7 billion to $426 billion, up 5%. However, demand in Australia is down, with a savage drop in sales in 2Q16.

Aussies buy fewer smartphones ? 18% decline on a year ago International Data Corporation (IDC) says only 1.8 million smartphones were shipped in Australia in Q2, 2016 down from 2.2 million units a year ago. The 18% YoY (year-on-year) decline for the overall mobile phone market is the third consecutive quarter of double-digit decline.
